Skyrim The Elder Scrolls V

Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls V
Developer:  Bethesda Game Studios
Publisher:  Bethesda Softworks (2011)
Age Recommendations:  13 years and up
Genre:  Video Game

Annotation/Teaser:  Be the hero to save the Skyrim world from the evil dragon, Alduin.

Overview:  Skyrim is an action, role-playing game.  It can be played in first or third person.  Skyrim is the name of the province in which the player roams.   The player follows a story and tries to defeat Alduin, a dragon out to destroy the world.  A quest is assigned at the beginning of the game but after the initial stage of the quest is completed the player can decided to suspend the quest.  The player is allowed to travel anywhere in the world and can suspend the story at anytime for an indefinite amount of time.  One objective of the game is to improve the skills of the player's character.  Each character has three main attributes:  Health, Magicka, and Stamina.  These attributes can be depleted and must be regenerated.  The player also relies on the use of weapons and there are weapons for both hands which can be reassigned throughout the game.  There are 244 quests and over 300 points of entry in Skyrim.

Developers:  Bethesda Game Studios is an Amercian in-house development studio at Bethesda Softworks.  It was founded in Rockville, Maryland in 2001.  Currently, Todd Howard is the executive producer.  Bethesda Game Studios put together a team of 100 members to work on Skyrim.

Critical Evaluation:  This game is set in a cold northern region beyond a group of mountains.  Usually games with this setting seem to be a frozen wasteland.  This is not the case with Skyrim.  There are visibly frozen breaths and the feel of a Viking land where ax wielding characters huddle around crackling fires.  However, the setting is forbidding and slightly bleak.
Another element that works well in this game is the attention to detail.  When navigating through the game you will see details such as fish jumping from the water, wind visibly blowing off the rocks around the mountains, and cozy hearths of towns built on the side of mountains.  This adds to the reality of the game world.
The last feature of Skyrim that I love is the dragon slaying. Not only does this game allow the user to slay the dragons, they can absorb their souls and turn them into shouts which can then be used to kill the enemy.  This one feature, alone, will make the user rush to hunt dragons but be careful not to ignore the storyline because some of the shouts can be unlocked in the main story.
Overall, this game is fantastic.  It has an intriguing storyline and great graphics.  Teenagers and young adults will become addicted to this game.

Defense:

*I will keep the library's selection policy on hand and memorized with a good understanding  of the standards and policies to show that the selection meets the standards.

*I will keep good and bad reviews (both electronic and print) and make sure they are from reliable and respected sources such as School of Library Journal, Booklist, and YALSA. I will have copies of these reviews to give away.

*I will confirm the library's position to provide intellectual freedom as stated in the Library Bill of Rights and keep a copy of this.

*I will keep a written rationale to justify the reasons this material is included in the collection, such as educational significance and curriculum ties.

*I will be respectful and calm and practice "active listening".

*I will make sure I read the material and are very familiar with it.

* I will keep a reconsideration form on file in the event that my other strategies don't work.

Why I Chose This Game?  I chose this game because it is wildly popular with my own teens and their friends.
