Ferguson's Career Guidance Center

Ferguson's Career Guidance Center
Provided by:    Facts on File
Genre:  Database

Annotation/Teaser:  Need help planning for college.  Now you can research thousands of careers in this database.

Overview:  This is a database that is filled with job hunting tips, career planning, job profiles, and intern opportunities.  The job profiles contain a description of the job, salary expectations, work environment, typical earnings, and potential jobs in the field.  There are also many lists that detail highest paying jobs, fastest growing jobs, etc.  Career skills are provided so the reader can concentrate on the skills needed for the job and video tutorials are provided to help learn the skills.  This database is a great way to help students plan for their futures.

Critical Evaluation:  Ferguson's Career Guidance Center is a great website but I found it a little hard to navigate through.  The format makes it difficult because it is written in paragraph form and separated by subject headings.  Specific jobs were hard to find without typing the job title in the search box.  But when a specific job was found, the job description was written well and in detail.  In spite of the difficulty I found with finding jobs and navigation around the site, this site would be a valuable tool for teens looking for a job.  The language is clear and precise and even the younger teen would be able to find helpful information.

Controversial Issues:  N/A

Defense:
There are no apparent challenge issues in this book.  If it were to be challenged I would do the following:

*I will keep the library's selection policy on hand and memorized with a good understanding  of the standards and policies to show that the selection meets the standards.

*I will keep good and bad reviews (both electronic and print) and make sure they are from reliable and respected sources such as School of Library Journal, Booklist, and YALSA. I will have copies of these reviews to give away.

*I will confirm the library's position to provide intellectual freedom as stated in the Library Bill of Rights and keep a copy of this.

*I will keep a written rationale to justify the reasons this material is included in the collection, such as educational significance and curriculum ties.

*I will be respectful and calm and practice "active listening".

*I will make sure I read the material and are very familiar with it.

* I will keep a reconsideration form on file in the event that my other strategies don't work.

Why I Chose This Database?   This is a great database to help high school and college age students in career planning.
